How do you install or maintain a CCTV system to achieve recorded images that are fit for purpose in Nigeria? You start by asking your self the following questions:

Was the area to be viewed by each camera measured out? What is the purpose of each camera?
Was the image viewed scientifically assessed to establish correct area coverage and quality?
Were the images viewed at night and recorded images assessed?
Are these tests repeatable using documentation supplied by the installer?

In most cases the answer will be NO!

The following Images taken from CCTV systems reportedly tested during installation by the most common methods used widely in the CCTV industry, the human eye alone.

From left, 30% of the image is wasted viewing the sky. The middle image, the camera angle is set to low 60% of people entering; their faces could not be seen. The last image, the night setup is wrong, the camera was only tested during the day time.

WHY?

By purchasing a CCTV testing kit and undertaking a training course in the correct use of the scientifically tested and proven target the mistakes shown above can be avoided. Take the course and understand the testing your installer should be doing on new systems and during maintenance of existing installations. Operating & maintenance costs can be reduced by effective monitoring and testing of CCTV images, when you use a standard test procedure.

Why would anyone pay thousands for a CCTV system, if that system is not set up correctly and more to the point. Why do installers take your money without setting up and fully testing an installation to proven international methods? Methods that have been written into British and European standards and are currently being written into SANS that will become standard CCTV practice in South Africa.
